The Sea Lady (1902) by H. G. Wells is a satirical fantasy novel in which a mermaid named Miranda comes ashore on the English coast and assumes the identity of Miss Doris Thalassia Waters in order to pursue Harry Chatteris, a man she had previously encountered at sea. Installed within respectable Edwardian society under the guise of an invalid, she quietly disrupts social conventions while tempting Chatteris to abandon his conventional engagement and embrace a more instinctive and romantic existence.
