The Croquet Player (1936) by H. G. Wells is a short, haunting allegory in which a casual croquet player recounts an unsettling conversation with a troubled stranger who believes the world is gripped by an invisible force of fear and dread. As the stranger describes a mysterious “terror” spreading through his community, the narrative gradually shifts from polite social conversation to a deeper meditation on mass anxiety, moral responsibility, and the psychological climate of the interwar world. Blending philosophical reflection with quiet unease, Wells uses the small mystery to explore the pervasive sense of dread that shadowed Europe in the years leading up to the Second World War.
