Franny and Zooey collects two related pieces by J.D. Salinger, both first published in The New Yorker, centering on Franny and Zooey Glass, the two youngest members of the brilliant and troubled Glass family who recur throughout Salinger’s later fiction. “Franny” follows a college student through a spiritual crisis over a weekend visit, while the longer “Zooey” unfolds in the family’s Manhattan apartment as her actor brother tries to console her. Published in 1961, only a few years before Salinger withdrew almost entirely from public life, the book was an immense popular success and remains, after The Catcher in the Rye, his best-known work. It is dedicated to William Shawn, the legendary editor of The New Yorker.
