A History of the English-Speaking Peoples is Winston Churchill’s grand narrative of the shared history of Britain and the nations that grew from it, carrying the story from Julius Caesar’s invasion of Britain to the close of the nineteenth century across four volumes: The Birth of Britain, The New World, The Age of Revolution, and The Great Democracies. Churchill conceived and largely drafted the work during the 1930s, but its publication was long delayed by the Second World War and his return to government, and it finally appeared between 1956 and 1958, after his second premiership. Sweeping in scope and animated by his conviction of the common inheritance and destiny of the English-speaking world, it stands among the major literary achievements of the statesman who had been awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953, and it became one of his most widely read works.
