The Centenary Limited Edition of The Collected Works of Sir Winston Churchill
The Centenary limited edition of Churchill’s complete Works. Octavo, original full vellum stamped in gilt with the Churchill arms, spines gilt, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, illustrated with plates and maps, housed in the original gilt-decorated slipcases. Originally projected to comprise 3,000 sets, the edition was left unfinished when the publisher collapsed, and perhaps 1,750 to 2,000 sets are thought to have been completed. In near fine condition. A handsome set of the first collected edition of Churchill’s works.
Issued between 1973 and 1976 to mark the centenary of Winston Churchill's birth in 1874, the Centenary Limited Edition gathers the whole of his published writing into a single uniform collection, from his early war reporting and the life of his father Lord Randolph Churchill to the great histories The World Crisis, Marlborough, The Second World War, and A History of the English-Speaking Peoples, along with his biographies, memoirs, essays, and speeches. Together they represent the literary achievement of the statesman who was also awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953, for his mastery of historical and biographical writing and his brilliant oratory in defense of human values. Producing the edition required an extraordinary act of cooperation among Churchill's publishers: "To achieve publication, 11 publishing houses in Great Britain, the United States and Canada released their individual copyrights, in exchange for the promise that no other complete collection of Churchill's works would be published until the expiration of international copyright in 2019" (Langworth, 362).
