One page autograph letter signed by Winston S. Churchill, entirely in his hand. Written to Mr. Crawshaye Williams regarding a forthcoming political meeting, dated October 6, 1904, on his 105 Mount Street letterhead. The letter reads in full, "Dear Mr. Crawshaye Williams, You are quite right to proceed with your arrangements for the meeting in your constituency on Dec. 7. I think you would have been wiser to hold it under the auspices of the Free Trade League. All your Liberals could have attended too, but I am personally quite agreeable to either course. Yours Winston S Churchill." The letter's reference to the Free Trade League speaks directly to the defining political battle of Churchill's early career, when he broke with his own Conservative Party over Joseph Chamberlain's protectionist tariff reform campaign and crossed the floor to the Liberals, staking his political future on the free trade cause. Sir Winston S. Churchill (1874 to 1965) was the towering British statesman, soldier, and writer who led the United Kingdom to victory in the Second World War. First elected to Parliament in 1900 as a Conservative, he broke with his party in 1904 over the issue of free trade and crossed the floor to the Liberals, beginning a long and turbulent career that would carry him through the Admiralty, the Exchequer, and ultimately, following the resignation of Neville Chamberlain in May 1940, to the premiership. His speeches and radio broadcasts inspired British resistance during the darkest days of 1940 to 1941, when the Commonwealth stood almost alone against Adolf Hitler. A prolific historian and writer, Churchill was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953.
