British author Christopher Samuel Youd became best known for his science fiction novels published under the pseudonym John Christopher, including The Death of Grass and the young-adult series The Tripods. The World in Winter follows a group British refugees who flee to Nigeria in the threat of a new ice age caused by a reduction in the output of the Sun who come to find the country full of English refugees living in slums.
