First appearance of Evelyn Waugh’s The Loved One, first published in the literary magazine Horizon, volume XVII, No. 98, February 1948. Octavo, original publisher’s wrappers. In very good condition.
Evelyn Waugh’s The Loved One is a biting satire of the American funeral industry and Hollywood's artificial culture, reflecting Waugh’s fascination and disdain for postwar American society. Written following Waugh’s 1947 visit to California, the novella was inspired by his tour of Forest Lawn Memorial Park, a lavish cemetery that epitomized the commercialized approach to death in the United States. Originally serialized in Horizon magazine before its book publication, The Loved One contrasts British and American sensibilities through the experiences of its protagonist, Dennis Barlow, a British poet working at a pet cemetery.
