Signed Limited First Edition of John Irving's The Cider House Rules; Signed by Irving and Academy Award-Winning Actor Michael Caine
Signed limited first edition of Irving's sixth novel, basis for the 1999 film starring Tobey Maguire and Michael Caine. Octavo, original leather, gilt titles and tooling to the front and rear panels, raised bands, all edges gilt, silk endpapers, frontispiece by Scott Reynolds. Boldly signed by John Irving and by Academy Award-winning actor Michael Caine below Irving's signature. In one of the most unforgettable characters in cinematic history, Michael Caine plays Dr. Wilbur Larch, the ether-addicted obstetrician who runs the St. Cloud's orphanage in Maine. Larch is a surrogate father to Homer Wells (Tobey Maguire), the orphan he raises and personally trains in medicine and obstetrics without any formal schooling. Their relationship, and the tension between Larch's worldview and Homer's desire to see life beyond the orphanage, forms the emotional and moral fabric of the film Larch embodies the film's central ethical question. He performs illegal abortions out of conviction that women will seek them regardless and deserve safe care, while Homer refuses on principle. This disagreement drives much of the narrative's moral weight, and Homer's eventual return to St. Cloud's represents his coming to terms with Larch's vision of duty and compassion. Caine's performance earned him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, along with a Screen Actors Guild Award. His portrayal grounds the film's difficult subject matter in warmth and quiet authority, making Larch both a flawed man and a moral anchor. In fine condition.

Set in rural Maine in the first half of the 20th century, it tells the story of Dr. Wilbur Larch- saint and obstetrician, founder and director of the orphanage in the town of St. Cloud's. It is also the story of Dr. Larch's favorite orphan, Homer Wells, who is never adopted. 'Superb in scope and originality, a novel as good as one could hope to find from any author, anywhere, anytime. Engrossing, moving, thoroughly satisfying" (Joseph Heller). Basis for the 1999 film directed by Lasse Hallstrom, starring Tobey Maguire, Charlize Theron and Michael Caine. Irving won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, while Michael Caine won his second Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
