First edition, second printing of Ken Kesey's Sailor Song, the author's sprawling apocalyptic novel set in a near-future Alaskan fishing town, signed by Kesey with an original painting. Octavo, original half cloth. Signed by the author on the front free endpaper, "Ken Kesey 1993," who has added an original painting of a brightly colored fish amid a shower of pink bubbles. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Unique.
Sailor Song is Ken Kesey's ambitious apocalyptic novel, his first full-length novel in the nearly three decades since Sometimes a Great Notion (1964). Set in the near-future Alaskan fishing town of Kuinak, it follows a cast of dropouts, fishermen, and Native Alaskans as a Hollywood film crew and a looming ecological catastrophe descend on their remote outpost. Ken Kesey burst onto the American literary scene with One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1962), drawn from his experience as an aide in a veterans' hospital psychiatric ward, and followed it with the epic Sometimes a Great Notion (1964). As the leader of the Merry Pranksters, Kesey became a central figure of the 1960s counterculture, chronicled in Tom Wolfe's The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. In his later years he was known for embellishing signed books with his own vivid, freehand paintings, making decorated copies such as this especially desirable.
