Roger Maris at Bat is the autobiography of the New York Yankees right fielder Roger Maris, written with the sportswriter Jim Ogle and published in 1962, the year after his historic 1961 season. That year Maris hit 61 home runs to break Babe Ruth’s single-season record of 60, set in 1927, in a season-long chase that drew enormous public attention; because the 1961 schedule was longer than Ruth’s, the record was for years popularly noted with an asterisk. A two-time American League Most Valuable Player, Maris helped lead the Yankees to consecutive World Series titles and remains one of the most storied figures in baseball history. His single-season mark of 61 home runs stood until 1998.
