John Robert Stockwell was an American CIA officer who became one of the agency’s most outspoken critics. Over thirteen years and seven tours of duty he rose to lead the CIA’s Angola Task Force during the covert operations of 1975, then resigned and published In Search of Enemies (1978), a landmark insider account of the agency’s clandestine activities. Red Sunset, his first novel, followed in 198. Set in the small African nation of Burundi and drawing on his long experience in Africa, it allowed Stockwell to advance in fiction his conviction that the Cold War would end peacefully. The story follows Natalie Wilson, who travels to Burundi with her troubled husband Doug, against a backdrop of intrigue informed by the author’s firsthand knowledge of covert operations.
