Pet Sematary follows Louis Creed, a doctor who moves his young family to rural Maine, where an ancient burial ground beyond the woods holds the power to return the dead to life, though never as they were. Widely regarded as one of Stephen King’s bleakest and most frightening novels, it grew out of his own family’s life beside a dangerous road and the death of a beloved pet, and King reportedly found the manuscript so disturbing that he set it aside for a time before allowing its publication. First published by Doubleday in 1983, it became a great bestseller and was adapted for film in 1989 and again in 2019. The novel is dedicated to King’s friend and literary agent Kirby McCauley.
