Marion Fay, first published in 1882, is one of Anthony Trollope’s late novels and among his most detailed examinations of the English class system. The story contrasts two love affairs that each cross the boundaries of rank: Lord Hampstead, son of the Marquis of Kingsbury, falls in love with Marion Fay, the daughter of a Quaker clerk in the City, while his sister, Lady Frances Trafford, is determined to marry George Roden, a Post Office clerk. By turns tragic and comic, the novel reflects Trollope’s own long career in the Post Office and his abiding interest in the tension between social position and personal worth. It was first serialized in The Graphic between 1881 and 1882 before appearing in three volumes from Chapman & Hall.
