And dear little Sally Ann, 'Uncle Johnny' hopes that the magical wishing pebble of Raggedy Ann brings you a life of sunny health and good fortune, Uncle Johnny.” In very good condition, recipient's ownership inscription opposite the title page, reinforcement to the title page.
Johnny Gruelle (1880-1938) created Raggedy Ann, one of the most enduring characters in American children’s literature. According to the cherished family account, he found an old handmade rag doll in his mother’s attic and gave it to his young daughter Marcella, whose early death lent the gentle character a lasting poignancy and after whom this book is named. Marcella Stories, published by the P.F. Volland Company in 1929, gathers tales of the little girl and her beloved rag dolls, continuing the world Gruelle had introduced in Raggedy Ann Stories in 1918. His tender, whimsically illustrated books, animated by a spirit of kindness, have remained beloved for more than a century, and copies inscribed by the author in his gentle "Uncle Johnny" persona are highly desirable.
