Lila: An Inquiry into Morals, published in 1991, is Robert M. Pirsig’s second book and the sequel to his phenomenally successful Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Framed as a journey down the Hudson River aboard a sailboat, it develops Pirsig’s Metaphysics of Quality into an inquiry into morality, sanity, and value, taking as its occasion the narrator’s encounter with a troubled woman named Lila. Appearing seventeen years after his celebrated debut, it was among the most anticipated books of its day and further established Pirsig as one of the most original popular philosophers of the late twentieth century.
