Lila: An Inquiry into Morals, published in 1991, is Robert M. Pirsig’s second book and the sequel to his phenomenally successful Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Framed as a journey down the Hudson River aboard a sailboat, it develops Pirsig’s Metaphysics of Quality into an inquiry into morality, sanity, and value, taking as its occasion the narrator’s encounter with a troubled woman named Lila.
