Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is Roald Dahl’s most famous book for children, first published by Alfred A. Knopf in 1964. It tells the story of young Charlie Bucket, who wins one of five golden tickets granting a tour of the mysterious chocolate factory of Willy Wonka, where his four fellow winners meet a series of comic and cautionary fates. With its blend of dark humor, moral mischief, and pure invention, the book became one of the best-loved children’s stories of the twentieth century and was twice adapted for film, in 1971 with Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka and in 2005 in Tim Burton’s version starring Johnny Depp. Roald Dahl, a former RAF fighter pilot, was among the most popular children’s authors of his era, also the author of James and the Giant Peach, Matilda, and The BFG.
