Exceptional letter signed by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher to Nobel Prize-winning economist Friedrich von Hayek. One page, on Thatcher’s official 10 Downing Street letterhead and dated May 22nd 1984, the letter reads, “Dear Professor Hayek,” I have it in mind on the occasion of the forthcoming list of Birthday Honours to submit your name to The Queen with a recommendation that Her Majesty may be graciously pleased to approve that you be appointed a Member of the Order of the Companions of Honour. I should be glad to know if this would be agreeable to you. I shall take no steps until I have your reply. “Yours sincerely, Margaret Thatcher.” Accompanied by a large original black and white photograph of Hayek taken at the honorary appointment at Buckingham Palace in which, he was in fact, awarded the Companion of Honour Medal by Queen Elizabeth II. In fine condition. Matted and framed, the entire piece measures 24.5 inches by 19 inches. An exceptional piece of history.

Signed below by each member, including Herbert Hoover (Secretary of Commerce and future President of the United States), Andrew W. Mellon (Secretary of the Treasury), Frank B. Kellogg (Secretary of State and 1929 winner of the Nobel Peace Prize), Reed Smoot (United States Senator and co-sponsor of the 1930 Smoot–Hawley Tariff Act), Theodore E. Burton (United States Senator from Ohio), Charles R. Crisp, Richard Olney, Edward N. Hurley, Garrard B. Winston, Arthur N. Young and F.G. Blair of the Debt Commission. Also signed by Emile de Cartier, Emile Francqui, Felicien Cattier, Georges Theunis, Robert Silvercruys and Andrew Terlinden of the Belgian Commission. In near fine condition. Matted and framed, which measures 14 inches by 15 inches. Rare.

First edition of this monograph on China. Quarto, original cloth, illustrated throughout. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author to Henry Kissinger, “For Henry Kissinger in whose giant footsteps I followed in China, and it was a tough act to follow! All good wishes, Eve Arnold.” Arnold is referring to the slow opening throughout the 1970s of Communist China to Westerners, an opening famously managed on the United States end by protean Secretary of State and National Security Adviser Henry Kissinger, in collaboration with Presidents Richard Nixon and President Gerald Ford. Kissinger would later write his classic work On China, detailing his experience with China.

A portrait of Bernard Baruch signed to humorist Harry Hershfield. It reads, “For Harry Hershfield who radiates sunshine and good feeling wherever he goes with appreciation and best wishes from one who has basked in that sunshine BM Baruch 1952.” Hershfield was an American cartoonist, humor writer and radio personality. He was known as “the Jewish Will Rogers”. He also was a columnist for the New York Daily Mirror. His books include Laugh Louder, Live Longer and Now I’ll Tell One. As a comics artist he is best remembered for his newspaper comic Abie the Agent. The image measures 7.75 inches by 10.75 inches. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 22.5 inches by 18.5 inches. A nice association, uncommon with such a warm inscription.

Inscribed by the author on the half title page to Henry Kissingers, “A Henri Kissingers Secretaire d’Etat hommage respectueux, Suzanne Labin le Paris 12.3.83.” A nice association linking Labin, a provocative anti-Communist French analyst and Kissinger, a pro-Pinochet supporter. Labin portrays a Chile that vindicates Kissinger’s policies — Allende was the oppressor and Pinochet a beacon of progress according to Labin.
