First edition of Graham and Dodd’s seminal work, considered the Bible of modern financial analysis. Octavo, original red cloth. Boldly signed by Warren Buffett on the front free endpaper, Graham and Dodd’s most well-known adherent. Laid in is a 1993 Berkshire Hathaway Annual Metting Admission Card. “The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville” is a 1984 article by Warren Buffett promoting value investing, which was based on a speech given on May 17, 1984, at the Columbia University School of Business in honor of the 50th anniversary of the publication of Security Analysis. Using case studies, the speech and article challenged the idea that equity markets are efficient. Buffett brought up 9 investors whom he considered direct protegés of Graham and Dodd, and using their finances, then argued that “these Graham-and-Doddsville investors have successfully exploited gaps between price and value,” despite the inefficiency and “nonsensical” nature of the pricing of the overall market. Buffett concluded in the 1984 article that “some of the more commercially minded among you may wonder why I am writing this article. Adding many converts to the value approach will perforce narrow the spreads between price and value. I can only tell you that the secret has been out for 50 years, ever since Ben Graham and Dave Dodd wrote Security Analysis, yet I have seen no trend toward value investing in the 35 years I’ve practiced it. There seems to be some perverse human characteristic that likes to make easy things difficult. The academic world, if anything, has actually backed away from the teaching of value investing over the last 30 years. It’s likely to continue that way. Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace, and those who read their Graham & Dodd will continue to prosper.” In excellent condition with very light rubbing to the cloth. Examples of the first edition are known to exist both in black cloth binding, with “Whittlesey House-McGraw Hill” in gilt at the foot of the spine and in red cloth binding, with “McGraw-Hill Book Company” in gilt at the foot of the spine, as with this example. Rare first Latin edition of Galileo’s epoch-making Dialogo, the summation of the extraordinary mathematician’s astronomical thought and the work which directly precipitated his 1663 trial and judgement for heresy. Preceded only by the 1632 edition in Italian. Small octavo, bound in full contemporary vellum, engraved additional title page, full page engraved frontispiece portrait of Galileo by Jacob van der Heyden, woodcut diagrams, with the final leaf of errata. This Latin edition includes two tracts in the appendix not in the Italian edition of 1632, and it is the only major work of Galileo’s to be published outside Italy during his lifetime. The two added Latin tracts are the introduction to Kepler’s Astronomia nova (pp. 459-464), and a letter by Paolo Antonio Foscarini defending the truth of Copernicanism and rebutting the charge that it conflicted with scripture (pp. 465-495). With the appendix by P.A. Foscarini which contains an attempt to reconcile the Copernican views with the Holy Scripture. In near fine condition. Exceptionally rare, as the work was rigidly suppressed from the start.

With 18 full-page color illustrations by Philip R. Goodwin and Charles Livingston Bull. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page, “To Elinor Glyn:- My most popular, but my own heart goes out to some of my sociological screeds. Jack London Mar. 1, 1911.” The recipient Elinor Glyn was a British novelist and scriptwriter who specialized in romantic fiction, which was considered scandalous for its time. Her first book, The Visits of Elizabeth was published the same year as London’s first book. She later moved to California and became one of the first female writers of movie screenplays. She popularized the concept of the It-girl, and had tremendous influence on early 20th-century popular culture and, possibly, on the careers of notable Hollywood stars such as Rudolph Valentino, Gloria Swanson and, especially, Clara Bow. First edition of Friedman’s magnum opus. Octavo, original cloth, graphs and charts throughout. Association copy, inscribed by the author to the British economist Lionel Robbins on the front free endpaper, “To Lionel, in place of a work of art Milton.” The recipient, Lionel Robbins, along with J.M. Keynes, was the leading British economist during the inter-war period at the London School of Economics, he “dominated the economics department for thirty years and built it up to its pre-eminent position in British economics” (ODNB). Milton Friedman was less shaped by Robbins’s thought and teachings than many of his British contemporaries, but all economic thought in the period was deeply affected by Robbins’s work. Friedman and Robbins were both founding members at the Mont Pelerin Society in 1947, and in his and Rose’s memoirs Milton praises Robbins’s “genius” in drafting the statement of aims that was acceptable to all members, save Maurice Allais (Two Lucky People, p. 161). Aside from their shared economics profession, the Friedman and Robbins couples were friends for many years – Rose recalls in the memoirs that “I had met Lionel Robbins, not yet a Lord, many years earlier [from 1953] when he was visiting Aaron [Rose’s brother] in Washington. Lionel and Iris visited us in Cambridge and we had many visits with them in London” (IBID., p. 249). Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. From the collection of Sagan’s Executive Assistant, Shirley Arden, who was instrumental in Sagan’s success and handled all travel arrangements and publications in his most illustrious years which saw the Viking landings on Mars, the Cosmos television series, and the Voyager mission. Sagan’s biographer, Keay Davidson, used many of the documents in Arden’s archive as sources for his 1999 biography: Carl Sagan: A Life. Ann and Carl dedicated their book Comet (1995) to Arden, and she acted as the matron of honor in their wedding. In fine condition. First limited edition of the complete collection of the South Polar Times, a periodical created by Scott’s crew during his two polar expeditions on the ships Discovery and Terra Nova, with a slip signed by Ernest Shackleton and Rudolph Blakenburg Quarto, three volumes, publisher’s gilt decorated cloth, all edges gilt, frontispiece to each volume, elaborately illustrated with engravings after the expedition members’ original drawings, many in color. Volumes I and II are number 177 of only 250 copies, volume III is number 256 of 350 copies. From the Adventure and Exploration collection of James Stephen “Steve” Fossett with his bookplate to the pastedown of each volume. American businessman and record-setting aviator Steve Fossett became the first person to fly solo nonstop around the world in 2002 in his 10-story high balloon Spirit of Freedom. He completed the 2002 trip in 13 days, 8 hours, and 33 minutes and set records for both the Longest Distance Flown Solo in a Balloon and Fastest Balloon Flight Around the World. Fossett was also one of sailing’s most prolific distance record holders set the Absolute World Speed Record for airships with a Zeppelin NT in 2004. He received numerous awards and honors throughout his career including aviation’s highest award, the Gold Medal of the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), which he was awarded in 2002. Fossett disappeared on September 3, 2007 while flying a light aircraft over the Great Basin Desert, between Nevada and California. Additional bookplates from the libraries of Dr. Edward Bramley and polar scientist Anthony Michaels. In near fine condition. Laid in is an scarce autograph album page boldly signed by Ernest Shackleton and American businessman and former mayor of Philadelphia Rudolph Blakenburg. An exceptional set.

Rare African hunting rifle from the collection of Ernest Hemingway; obtained by him in Africa and later gifted to his best friend and biographer A.E. Hotchner. The African musket-rifle measures 5 feet in length and is elaborately decorated with intricately hammered beaded and etched metal wrappings and garnet gemstones. Hemingway began collecting guns at the age of 10 when his grandfather gave him a 20 gauge shotgun. Throughout his lifetime he bought, sold, and gifted several guns from his collection and was often photographed proudly displaying a variety of rifles while bird and big-game hunting in Idaho and Africa. The present rifle was obtained during Hemingway’s 1953-1954 winter safari trip to Africa with his fourth wife Mary, during which they survived two near-fatal plane crashes and were for several weeks presumed dead. Hemingway later gifted the gun to his closest friend and biographer A.E. Hotchner. The gun is accompanied by a signed letter of provenance from Timothy Hotchner, A.E. Hotchner’s son, which reads in part, “This item was given to my father by Ernest Hemingway in his youth. My father met “Papa” in 1948 and remained close friends with him… until Hemingway’s death in 1966. Hemingway was very connected to Africa, and several of his writings were influenced by the time he spent there including Green Hills of Africa, The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber, and his classic work, The Snows of Kilimanjaro… My father proudly displayed this gun in his study, where he would tell people, including me, about its storied history. He liked to say that it probably took two people to fire it: one to pull the trigger and the other to have the barrel rested on his shoulder. My father had many keepsakes from Hemingway, including letters, photos, and matador outfits, which he sold over many years. However, this gun was perhaps his favorite, and he kept it until his death.” In very good condition. From the collection of A.E. Hotchner. Exceedingly rare with exceptional provenance.

There are no copies of this edition recorded in OCLC or the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, and in the last twenty-five years no copies have appeared at auction.

Signed on the front free endpaper in the year of the film’s production by Marlon Brando (cast as First Lieutenant Fletcher Christian), Lewis Milestone (the film’s director), Tarita Teriipaia (Princess Maimiti), and inscribed by the film’s producer Aaron Rosenberg, “To Phil Corrin, Hope the picture lives up to your expectations. Most sincerely, Aaron Rosenberg.” Additionally signed on the verso by twelve additional cast members including Richard Harris and Duncan Lamont. Octavo, bound in full pebbled sheepskin, gilt titles and tooling to the spine and front panel, top edge gilt, in the scarce original glassine and original slipcase. An extraordinary example, most rare and desirable signed by Brando and the cast.
