First edition of this classic work, which traces the development of ideas in physics. Octavo, original blue cloth. Association copy, inscribed by Albert Einstein on the front free endpaper, “To Dr. Rowntree with kindest regards A. Einstein 1941.” The recipient, Dr. Leonard Rowntree is most well known for pioneering kidney research including the Rowntree test for kidney function; dialysis; the intravenous pyelogram and plasmapheresis. He joined Dr. John J. Abel at Johns Hopkins University in 1907, and in 1912 they developed the first artificial kidney, in the form of the dialysis machine. Rowntree would later move to the Mayo Clinic and is widely credited with creating the research tradition there. In 1946, President Harry Truman awarded Rowntree the Medal for Merit for his work as chief of the medical division of the Selective Service System from 1940 to 1945. Near fine in a very good price-clipped dust jacket. An exceptional association.

In the 1920s he created a series of portraits of his friends and fellow artists including Lovis Corinth, George Grosz, Arno Holz and Heinrich Zille. He produced a very fine book of exlibris (bookplates) in Berlin 1921. This book contains the exlibris of Albert Einstein 1917, probably Einstein’s only bookplate. The etching measures 12.5 inches by 9.5 inches. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 18.75 inches by 15.75 inches.

Hawking was a theoretical physicist, cosmologist, and author who was director of research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology at the University of Cambridge at the time of his death. Hawking’s scientific works included a collaboration with Roger Penrose on gravitational singularity theorems in the framework of general relativity and the theoretical prediction that black holes emit radiation, often called Hawking radiation. He was the first to set out a theory of cosmology explained by a union of the general theory of relativity and quantum mechanics. Hawking may be one of the most recognizable of theoretical physicists in part due to ALS, which gradually paralyzed him over the decades. After the loss of his speech, he was able to communicate through a speech-generating device—initially through use of a handheld switch, and eventually by using a single cheek muscle. He is also well known since he achieved commercial success with several works of popular science in which he discussed his theories and cosmology in general. His book A Brief History of Time appeared on the Sunday Times bestseller list for a record-breaking 237 weeks. A wonderful connection to this book, which Hawking likely used in his development of his final paper based on string theory, called “A Smooth Exit from Eternal Inflation”, which had its latest revisions approved on March 4, ten days before Hawking’s death. Hawking met the authors at many conferences, as they were in the same field, including at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Mumbai. Both volumes are fine in a fine dust jacket. An exceptionally desirable provenance.

Stephen Hawking was a theoretical physicist, cosmologist, and author who, like Newton, held the post as Lucasian Chair of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge. Both Newton and Hawking’s scientific works focused on gravity, with Hawking’s research mainly looking at gravitational singularity theorems in the framework of general relativity and the theoretical prediction that black holes emit radiation, often called Hawking radiation. He was the first to set out a theory of cosmology explained by a union of the general theory of relativity and quantum mechanics. Hawking may be one of the most recognizable of theoretical physicists in part due to ALS, which gradually paralyzed him over the decades. After the loss of his speech, he was able to communicate through a speech-generating device—initially through use of a handheld switch, and eventually by using a single cheek muscle. He is also well known since he achieved commercial success with several works of popular science in which he discussed his theories and cosmology in general. His book, A Brief History of Time, appeared on the Sunday Times bestseller list for a record-breaking 237 weeks. In this book, Hawking called Sir Isaac Newton’s Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica, probably the most important single work ever published in the physical sciences. He refers to Newton at least 70 times in this work and most likely used The Newton Handbook as a resource. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. A wonderful association linking Hawking and Newton, made all the more interesting as Hawking is buried next to Newton in Westminster Abbey.
