First edition of the author’s third book and hallmark of campaign journalism. Octavo, original black boards. Signed by Hunter Thompson on the half-title page and subjects, George McGovern, Jimmy Carter, Gary Hart and illustrator, Ralph Steadman. Fine in a near fine first issue price-clipped dust jacket with the white boarder around the photograph of Thompson and McGovern on the rear panel. The book is notable for its introduction not only to the candidates of 1972 but also its early glimpses of future political leaders. Gary Hart of Colorado, who served as McGovern’s campaign manager and would later run for and win a seat in the United States Senate, and Georgia Governor Jimmy Carter, who would himself capture the 1976 Democratic nomination and Presidency. A unique example with this collection of signatures.

First French edition (preceding the first English edition) of the Wiesel’s classic first work. Octavo, original wrappers. Association copy, inscribed by the author to Abba Eban, “Pour Eban- le a sa propre commencement a sa historie: la voice- Elie W. New York, 1967.” Translated as, “The beginning of his own history Elie W.” As it increased in popularity, Wiesel’s Night was translated into 30 languages and prompted meetings with several important literary and political figures including Saul Bellow and Abba Eban. In 1955, Wiesel moved to New York to work as a foreign correspondent for Yediot Ahronot, the largest daily Newspaper in Israel. Eban was also posted in New York throughout the 1950s serving as Israel’s ambassador to the United States and, in 1952, was elected Vice President of the UN General Assembly. At the time of the present inscription, Eban had just been appointed as Israel’s foreign minister, the most important position in the Israeli cabinet. As Israel’s foreign minister Eban would defend the country’s reputation after the Six-Day War, asserting in a speech to the United Nations General Assembly that Israel had acted in response to an imminent threat. In very good condition with some light rubbing to the extremities. Preface by Francois Mauriac. From the library of Abba Eban. An exceptional association, commemorating the culmination of Eban’s political career.

First edition, first printing, first state of Quotations from Chairman Mao. Duodecimo, in the original iconic red vinyl, title to front cover in blind, frontispiece portrait of Chairman Mao. With the textual error on pp. 82/83 consisting of a transposed character, reading “li men wo yong” instead of “li yong wo men” corrected by hand and Lin Biao’s calligraphic endorsement leaf intact after the frontispiece with the uncorrected superfluous brush stroke in the second line. In 1972, an edict was issued that Lin’s name was to be obliterated from history, following disclosures that he had plotted a coup and planned to assassinate Mao; consequently, “many surviving copies in the Chinese language have that page legitimately torn away, mutilated or censored” (Schiller, p. 36). In near fine condition with the first leaves dampstained. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A very bright example, rare and desirable.

Centenary limited edition of Sir Winston S. Churchill’s collected works, inscribed by both his wife and youngest daughter in the year of the centenary of his birth to the winner of the 1974 C & G Gimcrack Horse Race at that very race. Octavos, 34 volumes bound in the original full vellum with gilt titles and gilt-stamped Churchill coat of arms to the spines and front panels, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Each volume housed in the original dark green slipcase which is also gilt-stamped with the Churchill coat of arms. One of only 3,000 sets produced, this is number 143. Volume I, which contains My Early Life and My African Journey is inscribed by The Baroness Clementine Churchill opposite her preface, “Inscribed by Clementine Spencer Churchill” as well as her youngest daughter Mary, “presented by her youngest daughter Mary Soames, “and presented by her daughter to Mr. Ravi Tikkoo at York Races August the 22nd 1974.” The inscribed volume is housed in a custom oak and vellum clamshell box with ornate claw feet, velvet lining, and gold plaque which reads, C and G Gimcrack Stakes 1974 Presented to Mr. Ravi Tikkoo Owner of Steel Heart (Habitat – A. I. by Abernant) Winner of the C & G Gimcrack Stakes 1974, by Lady Soames in the Centenary Year of the Birth of Her Father Sir Winston Churchill.” In excellent condition. Jacqueline Kennedy hand writes the first lines from the Robert Frost poem Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening. From the collection of Mary Gallagher, who was the personal secretary to Jacqueline Kennedy from 1957 to 1964, which includes the Kennedy presidency. Before that, she was Senator John F. Kennedy’s secretary and worked briefly for Jackie’s mother. Robert Frost was one of President and Mrs. Kennedy’s favorite poets. He was invited to present two of his poems at the Kennedy Inauguration on January 20, 1961. Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening is perhaps his best known work; and Frost himself admitted that it was “my best bid for remembrance.” Mrs. Kennedy slightly misquotes the three concluding lines, “For I have promises to keep And miles to go before I sleep And miles to go before I sleep.” Jacqueline wrote them on Mary Gallagher’s shorthand notebook in her new home in Georgetown, in 1964, where she moved to after leaving the White House. Gallagher further explains in her affidavit: “This happened to be but one of the many poems that [Mrs. Kennedy] had chosen daily from little stacks of books in which she had placed paper markers to designate the pages that had the various passages for me to type up over the next few weeks. As she explained, they were ‘for the fund-raising dinner in New York on the 16th, to be recited by Frederic March.’ The poem was recited by March at the Kennedy Library dinner and the Democratic Convention that same year. Matted and framed opposite a photograph of President and Mrs. Kennedy and Robert Frost. The entire piece measures 17 inches by 21 inches.

First edition of George Bernard Shaw’s short story collection, including the satirical allegorical title story: The Adventures of The Black Girl in Her Search For God. Octavo, original illustrated boards, pictorial endpapers, designed and illustrated with engravings by John Farleigh. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page, “To Eleanor and Theodore Roosevelt this Visiting Card after a memorable day at Government House, Manila from Charlotte F. Shaw and G. Bernard Shaw 9th February 1933.” Mr. and Mrs. George Bernard Shaw stopped at Manila on a round-the-world cruise where they were invited to lunch with Theodore Roosevelt Jr., the eldest son of Theodore Roosevelt, and his wife Eleanor Butler Alexander-Roosevelt where they enjoyed lunch and Shaw assisted in editing one of Theodore’s reports to the war department. Laid is is a small copy of a selection of pages from Eleanor Butler Alexander-Roosevelt’s 1959 autobiography ‘Day Before Yesterday’ which describes the visit in detail and also mentions the occasion upon which they received the current inscribed volume in the mail after the Shaw’s visit. In near fine condition. In the original glassine which is in very good condition. Rare and desirable with exceptional provenance.
