Rare late 18th century liturgical broadside. Printed broadside mounted on a decorated heart-shaped hardwood frame with a hand-painted botanical border containing Protestant liturgical chants, daily prayers, and hymns. Text in Latin. In very good condition. Scarce and desirable.

Wonderfully illustrated Ethiopian Coptic Ge’ez prayerbook. Small octavo, original wooden boards, parchment manuscript of 176 leaves on vellum, late-18th century. Written in Ethiopic Ge’ez script in two columns, in black ink with some words or letters in red (with 3 pages of text on blank pages at beginning and end in another less formal hand). With 9 full-page hand-painted miniatures in colors on 8 leaves depicting Biblical scenes from the Old and New Testaments. In very good condition.

Rare Naval commission signed by Andrew Johnson as President of the United States. One page, partially printed with engraved vignettes and retaining the original orange paper seal, the document is dated May 1, 1866 and appoints Leonard Paulding as Commander in the United States Navy. Signed at the conclusion by Andrew Johnson and countersigned by Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles. Leonard Paulding served in the U.S. Navy from 1840 to 1867. Beginning as a midshipman abroad the USS Preble II, he was promoted to an officer on September 14, 1855 and subsequently to commander with the present document. In near fine condition. Matted. The entire piece measures 23 inches by 20 inches.

"The Largest Portrait Engraving of Abraham Lincoln"; Rare Henry Gugler Life-Size Engraved Portrait of Abraham Lincoln
Rare Henry Gugler engraving of President Abraham Lincoln, the largest engraved portrait of Lincoln produced. One of the foremost engravers of 19th century Germany, Gugler immigrated to the U.S. in 1853 where he found work with a New York firm specializing in bank note engraving. By the early 1860s he began working at the National Note Bureau, later known as the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington, D.C. and in 1863, the National Note Bureau of Engraving and Printing hired him as one of their first vignette engravers. It was there that Gugler engraved the “The Pioneer” which appeared on the $5 and $20 United States bills. Gugler’s most famous engraving was this life size steel engraving of President Abraham Lincoln; his most important work completed in 1869 after two years of work. In very good condition. In a period wooden frame with gilt inner border. The entire piece measures 27 by 22 inches.
