Rare elaborately illuminated nobility diploma signed by King Charles II of Spain, appointing Don Martin Damian Mendizabal the title of Marquis of Torre Gines. Quarto, bound in full red contemporary velvet covered boards with two metal clasps, containing five illuminated leaves, two fully illuminated in color with the Royal coat of arms and portrait of King Charles II, text in Spanish. Signed by King Charles II, “Yo el Rey” and additionally signed by several Royal secretaries. Bound with a printed manuscript of the Oath of Fidelity to the King of Spain with Royal stamps dated 1701 and with two autograph letters laid in, the first dated September 17, 1701 and signed by Philip V, and the second addressed to the Marquis. Exceptionally rare.

First edition of this collection of speeches delivered by Kennedy while he was Attorney General. Octavo, original cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, “For Phil, At least you weren’t in my bathroom when I got up this morning from his friend Bob Kennedy.” The recipient Philip Scheffler began working for the CBS Corporation, first as a copy boy for a news program, and then for “CBS Evening News”, as a writer, reporter, and editor, in 1951. In 1964, Scheffler began to produce documentaries and special news broadcasts. He was appointed producer of “60 Minutes” in 1971, and later promoted to senior producer in 1980. The newscasts Scheffler produced have received several awards, including the Emmy, Peabody, and Columbia-duPont awards. Individually, Scheffler has received the Alumni Award from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism (1981) and the Townshend Harris Medal, awarded by the City College of New York (1997) for post-graduate achievement. Association copy, signed by Richard Nixon on the flyleaf and from the personal library of his former speechwriter William Safire with a photocopy of the original letter in which Nixon presents a page of proofs to Safire dated 11-11-91 which reads in full, “Dear Bill, I am enclosing the page proofs of my new book which will come out in the last week of December. In view of recent developments in the international front you may find the chapters in The Former Evil Empire and the Muslim World particularly interesting – Regards – RMN.” William Safire was an important American author, columnist, journalist, and presidential speechwriter. He joined Nixon’s campaign for the 1960 Presidential race, and again in 1968. After Nixon’s 1968 victory, Safire served as a speechwriter for him and Spiro Agnew until joining the New York Times as a political commentator in 1973. Soon after joining the times, Safire learned that he was the target of wiretaps authorized by Nixon, which he wrote about with “restrained fury” in his August 9, 1973 column, “The Suspicious 17.” Fine in a fine dust jacket. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the dedication page, “To Bill Safire, One of our proud hoasts [sic] (but isn’t there something wrong with that grammatically? Mario 1994.” The recipient, William Safire, was an important American author, columnist, journalist, and presidential speechwriter. He joined Nixon’s campaign for the 1960 Presidential race, and again in 1968. After Nixon’s 1968 victory, Safire served as a speechwriter for him and Spiro Agnew. He authored several political columns in addition to his weekly column “On Language” in The New York Times Magazine from 1979 until the month of his death and authored two books on grammar and linguistics: The New Language of Politics (1968) and what Zimmer called Safire’s “magnum opus,” Safire’s Political Dictionary. Safire later served as a member of the Pulitzer Prize Board from 1995 to 2004 and in 2006 was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush. Fine in a fine dust jacket.
