Polish-born author Isaac Bashevis Singer published several novels of Jewish life and folklore and is considered to be one of the last great Yiddish authors. He collaborated with internationally-renowned American illustrator Maurice Sendak on his first children's book, Zlateh the Goat and Other Stories, in 1966, two years after Sendak received the Caldecott Medal for Where The Wild Things Are. Like Singer, Sendak was deeply affected by the loss of his extended family in the Holocaust in pre-war Poland; of Zlateh the Goat he wrote: "I cannot remember a time when I've not been haunted by ghosts of the old country. I am grateful to Isaac Bashevis Singer for writing these seven tales. They recreate the lost world I have so often tried to imagine; through them I have had the moving experience of bringing one of my beloved ghosts to life. These pictures are for them."
