We Now Know: Rethinking Cold War History is John Lewis Gaddis's influential 1997 reinterpretation of the Cold War, written in the first years after the fall of the Soviet Union and drawing on newly opened archives in Moscow, Eastern Europe, and China. Reversing aspects of his own earlier post-revisionist scholarship, Gaddis emphasizes the decisive role of ideology and of Stalin's character in the origins of the conflict, arguing that once the archives were opened the Cold War looked less like a tragic misunderstanding than a struggle that authoritarianism made all but inevitable. John Lewis Gaddis (born 1941), the Robert A. Lovett Professor of History at Yale University, is widely regarded as the dean of Cold War historians and the author of The United States and the Origins of the Cold War, Strategies of Containment, and the Pulitzer Prize-winning biography George F. Kennan: An American Life.
