First Edition of Valentino: Thirty Years of Magic; Signed by Valentino
First edition of the catalogue for the landmark 1992 retrospective celebrating thirty years of Valentino, signed and dated by the designer. Quarto, original stiff gold pictorial wrappers vibrantly decorated in Valentino’s signature red, with gatefold flaps, profusely illustrated with large-format and double-page fashion photographs and including a foldout plate near the rear, with a chronology, bibliography, and picture references. Signed and dated by Valentino in the year of publication on the title page, “Valentino, N.Y. 24.9.92.” The signature was obtained in person at a book-signing held at the Rizzoli Bookstore on Broadway to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the House of Valentino, during the designer’s Fall 1992 visit to New York for the Piazza Italia exhibition. In near fine condition.
Valentino Garavani, known simply as Valentino, was one of the most celebrated fashion designers of the twentieth century, founder of the Roman couture house that bears his name and creator of the signature shade of scarlet known as “Valentino red.” Established in Rome in 1960, the House of Valentino dressed royalty, film stars, and society figures for more than four decades, becoming a byword for Italian glamour and elegance. Thirty Years of Magic was published in 1992 to accompany the grand retrospective marking the house’s thirtieth anniversary, celebrated that autumn in New York as part of the Piazza Italia exhibition. Lavishly illustrated, it surveys three decades of Valentino’s couture and remains among the most sumptuous records of his work.
