Autograph document signed by the 18th President of the United States, Ulysses S. Grant. The document reads, “I hereby authorize and direct the Secretary of State to affix the seal of the United States to an envelope containing a letter addressed to the King of Spain, Credence of Gen’l D. E. Sickles, dated this day and signed by me and for so doing this shall be his warrant. U. S. Grant Washington 9th January 1871.” Amadeo I of Spain reigned from 1870 to 1873. He was elected by the Cortes as Spain’s monarch in 1870, following the deposition of Isabella II, and was sworn in the following year. Matted and framed with a portrait of Grant and a medallion of Grant. The document measures 7.25 inches by 6 inches. Matted and framed. The entire piece measures 22 inches by 15 inches.

Prior to serving as the 18th President of the United States, Ulysses S. Grant served as the Commanding General of the United States Army and led the Union to victory over the Confederacy under the supervision of President Abraham Lincoln. Elected president in 1868, Grant stabilized the post-war national economy, created the Department of Justice, and led the Republicans in their efforts to remove the vestiges of Confederate nationalism, racism, and slavery.
