Ian W. Toll is an esteemed American historian and author specializing in naval and military history. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in American History from Georgetown University in 1989 and a Master in Public Policy from Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government in 1995. Before transitioning to writing, Toll held positions as a Wall Street analyst, a Federal Reserve financial analyst, and a political aide and speechwriter. His inaugural book, "Six Frigates: The Epic History of the Founding of the U.S. Navy," published in 2006, received the Samuel Eliot Morison Award and the William E. Colby Award. Toll is also renowned for his Pacific War Trilogy—comprising "Pacific Crucible: War at Sea in the Pacific, 1941–1942" (2011), "The Conquering Tide: War in the Pacific Islands, 1942–1944" (2015), and "Twilight of the Gods: War in the Western Pacific, 1944–1945" (2020)—which offers a comprehensive analysis of naval operations in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
