Tree and Leaf.

"All tales may come true": First Edition of J.R.R. Tolkien's Tree and Leaf

Tree and Leaf.

TOLKIEN, J.R.R.

Item Number: 137804

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1965.

First edition of this work by the author of The Lord of the Rings. Octavo, original cloth. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. From the library of bookplate noted zoologist and marine biologist James Glen Mead with his bookplate to the front pastedown; brief gift inscription on front endpaper. Jacket design by Robert Quackenbush. An exceptional example.

Tolkien's Tree and Leaf consists of two parts, the first: his lengthy essay On Fairy Stories, and the second: one of his earlier short stories, Leaf by Niggle. Like the later and more generous The Lord of the Rings, the latter shows Tolkien's mastery of the art of 'sub-creation', or the power to give fantasy the inner consistency of reality.
