Transatlantic Sketches.

"I have been strolling and restrollling along the ancient wall - so perfect in its antiquity": First edition of Henry James' Transatlantic Sketches

Transatlantic Sketches.

JAMES, Henry.

Item Number: 81052

Boston: James R. Osgood & Co, 1875.

First edition of James’ autobiographical collection of travel pieces. Octavo, original cloth, gilt titles and tooling to the spine. In good condition. A nice example of this important work.

The publications of Transatlantic Sketches, A Passionate Pilgrim, and Roderick Hudson in 1875 heralded the beginning of James' long and influential literary career which lasted until his death in 1916. During his teens, James traveled abroad frequently with his parents and siblings and the majority of his body of work came to embody his experiences as a young, naive American moving into more sophisticated European circles.
