First limited edition and advance review copy of Stein’s three-part novel, published posthumously with the consent of Alice B. Toklas from the original manuscript owned by Carl Van Vechten. Octavo, original cloth with paper spine label. One of 515 copies printed, 490 of which were numbered and for sale and the remaining of which were lettered A to Z. This copies is marked R. With the publisher’s advance review copy slip laid in dated May 10th 1950. In fine condition.

Stein originally wrote this three part novel in 1903 under the title Quod Erat Demonstrandum, during her tenure at John Hopkins University. Her time at John Hopkins was marked by challenge and stress as men dominated the medical field, and the inclusion of women in the profession was not unreservedly or unanimously welcomed. Later published posthumously as Things As They Are, this work revealed Stein to be a depressed young woman dealing with a paternalistic culture, struggling to find her own identity, which she realized could not conform to the conventional female role.
