One of fifty sets which were made for members of the Diplomatic and Consular Service at the time Roosevelt was elected Vice-President. Octavo, 4 volumes, original brown cloth, gilt titles to the spine, gilt topstain, illustrated with plates from old engravings, paintings, drawings, and other sources; folding maps. Presented to Henry Morgan, a diplomat who had been posted as Consul, at the time of Roosevelt’s election, to the northern Swiss canton of Aarau. In near fine condition. Rare and desirable.

"The Winning of the West remains one of the greatest works of western history. . . . [It] reflects the character of its author. It is sometimes quirky and full of prejudices and blind spots, but it is cultivated and sweeping in its learning and encompassing in its judgments" (John Milton Cooper Jr).
