Presidential edition of Theodore Roosevelt’s American big game epic. Octavo, original cloth, spine label, frontispiece engraving. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, “Master Roger Shaw, from a fellow lover of nature, Theodore Roosevelt June 15th 1908.” Tipped in to the front pastedown is a letter originally enclosed on White House letterhead addressed to Dr. Albert Shaw, Review of the Reviews, 13 Astor Place, New York, N.Y.: “June 16, 1908 My dear Dr. Shaw: By the direction of the President I send you the accompanying copy of the Wilderness Hunter for your son. Very Truly Yours, Secretary of the President.” Additionally tipped in on the rear endpaper is a letter signed by Roosevelt’s niece Eleanor Roosevelt on White House letterhead, “May 5, 1939 My dear Mr. Shaw: You were more than kind to write to me and I am glad that you know my nephew. Both my brother and I are appreciative of your expression of sympathy. With many thanks for your letter, I am very sincerely yours, Eleanor Roosevelt.” The recipient, Dr. Albert Shaw was a prominent early 20th century American journalist and professor at Cornell University who established the American edition of the Review of the Reviews, a monthly journal featuring dozens of magazine and books reviews in addition to commentaries on world events. In very good condition with some ink blotting to Roosevelt’s lengthy inscription. A unique example linking the two Roosevelt White Houses.

When his first wife died in 1884, Theodore Roosevelt withdrew to his cattle ranch in western Dakota. There, he wrote Hunting Trips of a Ranchman (1885) and Thomas Hart Benton (1887) and began work on The Winning of the West (1889). He also penned this account of big-game hunting in the United States, with chapters on hunting lore, hunting with hounds, hunting the grizzly, and hunting from the ranch.
