First edition of this compilation of two James novellas including the first appearance of The Turn of the Screw. Octavo original cloth, gilt titles to the spine. In very good condition. A fine example including one of James’ most memorable works.
Classified as both gothic fiction and a ghost story, James' haunting novella, The Turn of the Screw, relays the experience of a governess caring for two children at a remote estate which she concludes must be haunted. In the century following its publication, the novella became a cornerstone text of academics who subscribe to the New Criticism literary movement and has been adapted numerous times in both stage and film, including a 1950 Broadway play and the 1961 film The Innocents.
