Theroux states in his introduction to the present volume, "This book came about through luck, friendship and coincidence. V. S. Pritchett wrote a reflective essay last year for his eightieth birthday. It appeared in a Sunday newspaper. It seemed to me wise and funny; it was beautifully written - a summing up, lit with great happiness. It deserved more permanent record, but Pritchett had no immediate plans to include it in a collection. 'Why not make a small book of it?' I said. 'By all means,' Pritchett said. Michael Russell agreed - and he was at that moment sorting through some Reynolds Stone wood engravings."
