It was named by The Modern Library as one of the 100 greatest novels of the twentieth century and by listed by TIME Magazine Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005. It was adapted by Bernardo Bertolucci into the 1990 film with the same title starring Debra Winger and John Malkovich, and with a screenplay by Mark Peploe.
