First edition of this early work by Bloom. Octavo, original cloth. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the half title page, “To Richard A. Ware, gratefully, Allan Bloom February, 1969.” The recipient Richard A. Ware served under President Richard Nixon as acting assistant secretary of defense and who was later appointed by President Ronald Reagan to the Board of Foreign Scholarships. He was later named president of the Earhart Foundation, which is an American private charitable foundation that funded research and scholarship. It was founded in 1929 by oil executive Harry Boyd Earhart. Owner’s stamp on the front free endpaper and bottom of the text, near fine in a very good dust jacket. Books inscribed by Bloom are scarce.

Long regarded as the most accurate rendering of Plato’s Republic that has yet been published, this widely acclaimed work is the first strictly literal translation of a timeless classic.
