King’s second professional publication, “The Reaper’s Image,” earned him $40 and his first mention on a magazine cover. King recalls it being written at 18 before he went to college, and like his prior story in Startling Mystery, “The Glass Floor,” it takes a reflective subject — this time a priceless antique mirror said to hold the reflection of the Grim Reaper, and the skeptical collector curious to buy it. “The Reaper’s Image” would appear collected (with revisions) in his collection Skeleton Crew in 1985, and in 2013 was produced by Sammy Bates as a “Dollar Baby” short film — an arrangement by which King grants adaptation rights to one of his stories to an aspiring film or theater producer for $1.
