John Bates Clark was a leading pioneer of the marginal productivity theory of distribution which he developed in a series of articles from 1889-1891. Paul Samuelson's classic textbook, Economics, disseminated Clark's concept of capital worldwide, and it was Samuelson who was awarded the inaugural John Bates Clark medal given to estemed economists under the age of forty.
