Hope's The Prisoner of Zenda follows the story of the King of Ruritania, who is drugged on the eve of his coronation and resorts to persuading an English gentleman on holiday in Ruritania to act as a political decoy so that he may retain the crown. The novel has been adapted many times, mainly for film but also stage, musical, operetta, radio, and television.
