Originally published in The Atlantic Monthly in 1885, this later James novel concerns a young female bookseller who becomes involved in a radical terrorist assassination plot. Unusual to James for its violent plot, the novel is often paired with his more popular novel, The Bostonians, published the same year which is also concerned with political issues.
