Wiesel's sixth novel, The Oath, follows the story of Azriel, the only surviving Jewish member of the small Hungarian town of Kolvillàg after a violent pogrom. For decades, Azriel roams the earth alone until he encounters a young man wishing to take his own life. Told in fragments, the narrative unfolds in two places and points of time exploring the story of the Jews and their enemies and themes of friendship and hatred, testimony and silence.
