English novelist Jane Austen became known for her six novels which provided sharp critiques of the British landed gentry at the end of the 18th century. Her plots often explored the dependence of women on marriage in the pursuit of favourable social standing and economic security. "Generations of readers have marveled at the modernity of [Austen's] work. She is the mother of the English 19th-century novel as Scott is the father of it" (Kunitz & Haycraft, 23).
