Written toward the end of Greene's Life, The Last Word revolves around the story of the declining Pope John XXIX who has been overthrown and forced to resign to a life of obscurity, forbidden to keep any religious items and under house arrest. The story reflects Greene's growing disillusionment and frustration over the declining influence of Catholicism he saw in the modern world.
