First editions of of each volume in William Manchester’s acclaimed three-volume biography of Winston Churchill, each volume signed or inscribed. Octavo, three volumes, original cloth, illustrated. Volume I, Visions of Glory, is inscribed by William Manchester on the half-title page, “Once more, for Ray and Sudie Tompkins, William Manchester, Oklahoma City, 17 XI 95.” Volume II, Alone, is signed by William Manchester on the title page. Volume III, Defender of the Realm, which Paul Reid completed following Manchester’s death, is signed by Paul Reid on the title page. Each volume is near fine to fine in a near fine to fine dust jackets. A very nice set, uncommon signed.
The Last Lion is William Manchester’s acclaimed three-volume biography of Winston Churchill, among the most celebrated and widely read accounts of his life. The first volume, Visions of Glory (1983), follows Churchill from his birth and youth through his early career to 1932; the second, Alone (1988), traces his political isolation during the wilderness years to 1940; and the third, Defender of the Realm (2012), completed by the journalist Paul Reid from Manchester’s notes and outline after his death, carries the story through his wartime leadership and final years to 1965. Sweeping, novelistic, and deeply researched, the trilogy occupied Manchester for the last decades of his life and stands as one of the definitive popular biographies of the most consequential statesman of the twentieth century.
