Part of his Professor Challenger series including The Lost World, Land of Mist centers on Challenger's daughter Endi and old friend Edward Malone who develops an interest in the Spiritualism movement of the early 20th century. The story was heavily influenced by Doyle's own growing belief in Spiritualism after the death of his son, brother, and two nephews in World War I.
