CLARKE, Mrs. J. Stirling.

Item Number: 88164

London: Day & Son, Lithographers to the Queen, 1857.

First edition of equestrian expert Mrs. Stirling Clarke’s definitive guide to female equitation. Quarto, elaborately illustrated blue cloth. Illustrated with six chromolithographic plates and three black and white plates by Day & Son from photographs by Herbert Watkins. In very good condition, rebacked.

In 1857, driven by a perceived lack of literature on the subject, Mrs. J. Stirling Clarke authored The Ladies’ Equestrian Guide as a complete manual to riding for women. The book focuses on the tenets of Victorian horsemanship with particular attention to manner of dress, selection of horse, saddle, bridle, seat, and styles of riding.
