First editions of both volumes in Abbott’s history of the American Civil War. Octavo, two volumes, original publisher’s deluxe full morocco with gilt titles to the spine, marbled endpapers, all edges marbled, illustrated with maps, diagrams, and numerous steel engravings of battle scenes from original designs by Darley, and other eminent artists, and portraits of distinguished men including tissue-guarded frontispieces of Lincoln and Grant. From the library of Wisconsin Congressman John F. Potter with his gift inscription to vol. I and ownership name to vol. II. Nineteenth-century politician, lawyer and judge John Fox Potter was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1856 and he won re-election twice. When his Congressional term ended in early 1863, he declined appointment as governor of Dakota Territory and was later appointed by the Lincoln administration as Consul General of the United States in the British-controlled Province of Canada from 1863 to 1866. American historian and pastor John Stevens Cabot Abbott was a voluminous writer of books on Christian ethics, and of popular histories, which were credited with cultivating a popular interest in history. He is best known as the author of the widely popular History of Napoleon Bonaparte (1855), in which the various elements and episodes in Napoleon's career are described. Also among his principal works are: History of the Civil War in America (1863–1866), History of Napoleon III Emperor of the French (1868), and The History of Frederick II, Called Frederick the Great (1871).
