Provenance: from the collection of mountaineer Sir Peter Holmes, former president of the Hakluyt Society. Holmes and his wife, also a keen mountaineer, embarked on what would become a two-year honeymoon in the Himalayas in 1955. where they climbed 14 virgin peaks, which Holmes would later describe as “foothills compared to Everest – nothing higher than 22,000 feet.” In fine condition. The Himalayan Club was founded in Calcutta in 1928 with the stated mission "to encourage and assist Himalayan travel and exploration, and to extend knowledge of the Himalaya and adjoining mountain ranges through science, art, literature and sport" (Neate, j14).
