First Edition of The Great Train Robbery; Inscribed by Michael Crichton
First edition of Crichton’s classic of Victorian crime. Octavo, original half cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the title page, “To Bob, Michael Crichton.” Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Paul Bacon. An exceptional example.
The Great Train Robbery, published in 1975, took Michael Crichton from the laboratories of his early thrillers to Victorian England, recounting the audacious 1855 theft of Crimean War gold from a moving train, the first robbery of its kind, through the gentleman-criminal Edward Pierce. The novel became one of the year’s best sellers, and Crichton himself wrote and directed the 1978 film adaptation starring Sean Connery, Donald Sutherland, and Lesley-Anne Down. The author of The Andromeda Strain and Jurassic Park, Crichton remains the only writer to have held the number-one book, film, and television program in the United States simultaneously.
